I found an exit from the walls that had been left open â probably the one Douglas had used to enter the passages â and was happily barrelling through along the corridors and internally screaming at the fact that Douglas had pulled a knife on me when I literally ran into Jayne and Lizzie.
âWhere the hell were you?â I said, once I had got past the pain of colliding into them.
âNo time to talk,â said Lizzie. âWe were running from Mr Vanforte and Lottieââ
I wasnât going to be outdone. âYeah, well I was running from Douglas and he had a knifeââ
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â said a voice from behind me. I whirled around to find Douglas standing before me. He had silently come up in the darkness. âI found you in a passageway and you shrieked like you thought I was a ghost and ran.â
âI smacked you in the nuts with a lamp first,â I reminded him. He had lost the knife and was clutching my old torch.
âWhat is going on?â said another voice. Mr Vanforte and Lottie appeared from a different corridor. Mr Vanforteâs eyes flicked from Jayne to Lizzie to me.
âWhy are the three of you running around screaming on the night of my wifeâs death?â asked Mr Vanforte. âHave some compassion, for goodnessâ sake.â But instead of sounding upset he was snappy.
âHe was peeping in my bedroom,â I said, pointing at Douglas. âFrom one of those secret passages that are all over this house.â
âSheâs lying,â said Douglas quickly. âI knew the second I saw her that she was a liar.â But his eye twitched slightly, his nostrils flaring â he was lying, and heâ¦didnât like having to do it. Did the guy with a knife have a conscience? Who cared â he had a knife.
âOh, Dougie, youâre hurt,â said Lottie, squeezing past me and Jayne to get to Douglas. She looked at the bandage on his arm. Douglas jerked away from her, wincing as he did so, as if he didnât want her to touch him. She stood for a second looking up at him, confusion on her face like she didnât understand what had just happened.
âItâs interesting, isnât it, that there are so many secret passages about this house,â said Mr Vanforte, ignoring Douglas. âI donât know about many of them, but it appears others do. For example, I didnât realize there was a passage leading past the room Lottie and I were in just now. Iâd be very interested to hear what you think you heard, Jayne and Lizzie.â
Jayne and Lizzie werenât stupid enough to reply, but I looked at them with wide eyes to let them know they absolutely had to tell me later.
Mr Vanforte must have caught my expression, because he tilted his head at me. âWhat were you saying, Devi? About Douglas?â
âI followed Douglas into the passageway after he spied on me,â I said. âAnd he showed up and attacked me with a knife.â
Douglas chortled, though the laugh didnât reach his eyes.
